In the spirit of simplicity, here’s a classic way to serve fresh strawberries – with a few little twists. You could also add a bit of finely chopped crystallized ginger or lime zest to the mix if you like.

Serves 4

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 16 ounces strawberries, tops removed, quartered, or cut into equal-sized pieces if large
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons slivered mint (optional)
  • 1/3 cup crème fraîche or sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped pistachios or toasted almonds

1. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, balsamic, and vanilla.

2. Put the strawberries in a mixing bowl. Add the maple-balsamic mixture and toss well. Add half of the mint, if using, and toss again. Let sit for a few minutes.

3. Arrange four small dessert bowls (glass is nice) on your counter. Spoon some of the berry mixture into each. Garnish each with a dollop of crème fraîche or sour cream, a sprinkling of nuts, and some of the remaining mint, if using.
