Piece of Work: Kenneth Vincent

Kenneth Vincent, The More Things Change, 16 x 20 inches, oil on canvas.

Kenneth Vincent’s representational paintings start as memories of growing up on the Island. “A lot of what I do when it comes to my landscape painting refers back to driving around with my dad and my grandfather,” Vincent said. For his oil-on-canvas painting The More Things Change, inspiration was a car ride away.

“I happened to be out in Katama, driving around my three year old, and I looked at [the scenery] and thought about high school and hanging out in Edgartown and playing volleyball...and thinking about how at the end of the year they take all the lifeguard stands down. I think that’s what’s reassuring about the seasons. They come and go, they come and go.”

Vincent, an art teacher at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, has been painting professionally for about twelve years. Upcoming events include the Martha’s Vineyard Visual Arts Teachers’ Show at Featherstone in April and a Granary Gallery show on July 3.
