Our readers determine the overall results by voting online, and the following write-ups are by Karla Araujo, Ivy Ashe, Sara Brown, Alexandra Bullen, Susan Catling, Vanessa Czarnecki, Linley Dolby, Simone McCarthy, Alison Mead, Moira Silva, and Remy Tumin. The designation “close runner-up” indicates the runner-up received up to ten votes less than the winner.

 

On the Water

Best Beach: South Beach

Atlantic Drive, Edgartown.

Runner-up: State Beach

Beach Road, Edgartown and Oak Bluffs.

Grab a beach towel, pail, or wake board, and South Beach will provide the rest: crashing ocean waves, great sand-castle sand, and miles of beach to explore. Seals and seagulls hang out there too – they know a good spot when they see it (see our feature on page 56). At State Beach, it’s hard to resist a swim in the gently lapping waves.

 

Best Place to Kayak: Sengekontacket Pond

Edgartown and Oak Bluffs.

Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.

Large, gleaming Sengekontacket Pond is the place to go when you want to get away from it all. The pond borders three conservation areas (Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, Pecoy Point Preserve, and Caroline Tuthill Preserve) where you can beach your kayak and explore. Lagoon Pond offers more than five hundred acres of calm water between Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.
